Rian Boshoff is a highly experienced financial professional with a diverse background in auditing, financial management, and consulting. He is known for his expertise in turning around struggling municipalities and implementing effective financial strategies.
“I am passionate about creating success in the lives of others,” says Boshoff. This motto serves as a reminder of the significance of serving and supporting others in professional endeavours. It underscores the value of using one’s skills and expertise to positively impact individuals, organisations, and communities, ultimately contributing to their growth and success.
With a multi-cultural background, being born in Pietermaritzburg and raised proudly South African, Rian is able to communicate in Afrikaans, English, German, and Zulu. After matriculating in Ermelo, he moved to the North-West Province. He now resides in George, is married to Belinda and has two kids to complete their lives.
Rian’s love for outdoor activities is evident in his hobbies. He enjoys fishing, hunting, and aviation.
His desire for personal growth and gaining different perspectives on life led him to pursue two degrees – a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom). His MBA, in particular, was a significant milestone for him which expanded his understanding of business, enhance his critical thinking skills, leadership and management skills, as well as enabled him to approach challenges from various angles.
Throughout his career, Rian has held several notable positions. He began his professional journey at the Office of the Auditor-general, where he steadily progressed from an Audit Clerk to a Senior Auditor: Team Leader. He then joined Ernst & Young as an Internal Auditor in the Public Sector division. Rian’s experience also includes serving as a Municipal Town Treasurer/CFO at Ventersdorp Local Municipality, where he successfully implemented cash flow turnaround strategies and achieved remarkable financial results.
In 2002, Rian established his consulting venture called Intellect Direct Management Consulting. He provided financial consulting services to municipalities in various provinces, assisting with budgeting, financial statements, accounting backlogs, and staff training. He developed a long-term relationship with the Department of Local Government, helping struggling municipalities with financial discipline and cash management principles.
His expertise in financial management and accounting led him to collaborate with the Development Bank of Southern Africa on Project Siyenza Manje. He played a crucial role in stabilising financial positions and improving financial management in municipalities, such as Ditsobotla and Madibeng. Rian’s accomplishments include negotiating repayment agreements with creditors and achieving positive changes in audit opinions.
He further contributed to the field of financial management as a member of the Administrator’s Team for Ditsobotla Municipality and later as Acting CFO for the City of Matlosana. He thus successfully tackled financial turnarounds, improved cash flow, and implemented accounting standards and controls. His negotiation skills helped resolve outstanding debts with key stakeholders.
In 2017, Rian was appointed as an independent financial management consultant by Drakenstein Municipality. He was tasked to assist with various financial reconciliations, the compilation of annual financial statements, and the design of comprehensive financial structures. Rian’s ability to align salary structures with human resource management systems and reconcile traffic offence systems demonstrated his attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Later, Rian took on managerial roles within Drakenstein Municipality, including Manager: Strategic Financial Planning and Support and Manager: Compliance and Financial Management. In these positions, he focused on investment and growth modeling, revenue modeling, strategic cost modeling, and analysis of business processes. Rian also managed the implementation of a financial sustainability strategy, aiming to increase revenue and control expenditure.
